Sarracenia are North American pitcher plants. They grow in wetlands in East coast of the United States. S. purpurea is the only species that tolerates cold climates and ranges to Canada and Alaska. Sarracenia are good companion plants to Venus flytraps as they are often found growing side by side in the wild. Like Venus flytraps, they need a cold dormancy during the winter to store energy for next year. Don’t be alarmed if they start to wither as the temperature gets colder. This is a natural process for them. During the dormancy, keep them in a unheated garage or in a refrigerator. Take them outside in spring when there is no chance of frost. See care sheets for “American Pitcher Plants” and “Indoor Dormancy” or “Outdoor Dormancy” at the courtesy of the NECPS.
